Extreme Measures to Save Extraordinary Man

Bill Nathan, the freed slave who attended Mountainfilm in 2008 was the subject of a piece by Dan Harris of ABC News the other night. If you look closely, you can see a photo of him with author and activist Ben Skinner in Telluride at Mountainfilm when they won the Moving Mountains Prize.

Here’s an update on Bill’s status, from Ben Skinner:

I spoke with Bill this week, and he’s significantly improved. He still has a long row to hoe in his recovery, but he’s aiming to be back to Haiti next month. Right now, it’s just a question of slowing him down enough go through the necessary physical therapy. You remember at the Sheridan when he told the crowd that “Haiti needs me”? He’s feeling that acutely now.

I’ve been asked not to talk in any great medical detail, but suffice to say Bill suffered some very serious injuries. You can calculate that he was probably going about 100mph when he bounced off the concrete roof of St. Joseph’s neighbor. If he weren’t in peak physical shape, he’d be one of the 200K or so that we’re mourning today.
